( r ) LIVE REVIEW BY ROCK N ROLLA

05/09/11

Constent misspelling of Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo and a seeming neglect of his ( r ) moniker has led to much ignorance of what to expect when his soft-spoken, heavily-inked person takes the stage but there's no surprise quite like a pleasant one. His opening bars of delicate acoustics and tombstone vocals lower the guard for the oncoming onslaught, blasts of sonic texturing and bewildering drone that take on the natural progression of Earth one minute and dense, pulsing electronica of Autechre the next. In Particular, the manipulation of his baratone voice into an animalistic assault is something that could echo around the head for years.

A Live review of ( r ) show with Six Organs Of Admittance at Glasgow's Captains Rest.

LINE OF BEST FIT RECOMMEND LARSEN

05/09/11

Torino-based experimentalists and kings of collaboration Larsen have come up with one of the surprise albums of the year, an oddly-inspiring mix of post-rock and dark electronica, recorded with veteran underground singer Little Annie ’Anxiety’ Bandez from New York. The result is a sort of claustrophobic lounge-jazz with menace. Imagine Lou Reed singing in some downtown Berlin bar backed by prog legends Can, possibly with Low-phase Bowie and Eno twiddling the knobs - Cool Cruel Mouth is surely the chilling ‘anti-hero’ soundtrack of the summer, and worth a listen for just sounding so different from anything else around.

LARSEN - COOL CRUEL MOUTH 8/10 FROM DROWNEDINSOUND

12/07/11

"In a nutshell, this record sounds like Can, Neu!, or Harmonia with the acid-freak ranting replaced by a torch singer (which is a good nutshell to be in). But it’s also so much more than that."

Larsen's new album "Cool Cruel Mouth" scores a cool 8/10 from DrownedInSound.

JULIA KENT 9/10 REVIEW IN WHISPERIN' AND HOLLERIN'

06/07/11

“The sound of the cello always sounds melancholy, but in Julia Kent’s skilled hands it is neither a dry nor a moribund instrument. Her music is cool and self-contained but never cold or distant. In short, the album is more green than grey and offers a calming antidote for restless souls everywhere."

(r) - Drama Queen review in The Wire

10/05/11

(r) - Drama Queen (Tin Angel)
Subtitled “a gay album by Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo”, Drama Queen is the latest solo release from Xiu Xiu and larsen collaborator Palumbo; each track attempts to channel “the glamorous spirits of those holy mothers that are the divas of our times”. But as the album title suggests, the focus here is on the tragic rather than the ebullient.

Though Palumbo states ironically on the sleeve that “drama queens will never die”, these songs are suffused with death and decay, acknowledging that the fascination with the diva is contingent on her inevitable fall from grace. Musically, it is varied yet consistent work with some inspired collaborations. Carla Bozulich's vocal on the Dietrich standard “See What The Boys In The Backroom Will Have” is a highlight, her cracked tone a good match for the song's incrementally dimming hope.

Likewise, the interpretation of “Sister Morphine” is a claustrophobic dirge populated by whining spectres and low frequency crackles, soaked in an atmosphere of inescapable doom. Palumbo's own vocals are throaty, almost in Albert Kuzevin territory, though he 'does' a convincing Nico on Tammy Wynette's “The Ways To Love A Man”.

Despite its conceptually driven reliance on standards, Drama Queen's most effective pieces are instrumental. “The 6th Of August 1983” is a sinister shiver of synthetic texture, continually rippling and folding, while “Stormy Feathers” begins as a foray into Sunn O)))-type amp abuse before mutating into something that could have been derived from Japan's ill-fated 1991 reconciliation under the name Rain Tree Crow.

( r ) / TRUMPETS OF DEATH CO-HEADLINE SHOW ANNOUNCED

13/04/11

Trumpets of Death (r)

Tin Angel Records and Ghosttown presents a night of alternative sounds at Cafe Oto. On May 7th the venue will hold a night mixed with some of the most exciting bands and DJ's currently on the alternative underground scene.

( r ) is a solo project by underground music heavy weight, Fabrizio Modonese Polumbo, also a collaborator/member in Larsen, Blind Cave Salamander and XXL (an extension of Jamie Stewarts XIU XIU) to name but a few. ( r ) has recently released his latest record 'Drama Queen' on Tin Angel Records.

Trumpets of Death are the three-piece of Ben Wetherill, Karl D’Silva and Laura Wetherill, who released their debut record Teeth + Teeth = Teeths in March. With this they have created an unconventional avant-rock sound that is based around shifting and experimental song structures, Wetherill's high and tremulous tenor voice, propulsive rhythms, noise jazz and free-form melodic experimentation. With their debut album Teeth + Teeth = Teeths released last in March.

The Tenebrous Liar, fronted by Steve Gullick, are one of the most dynamic and uncompromising bands currently operating. Time Out Magazine say The Tenebrous Liar create “Feedback and distortion Strewn, emotionally charged, grungey soundscapes.”

Joining the bands will be two DJ's who currently reside in London, Stanley Schtinter and Symbol, as well as a special DJ set by Steve Gullick from Tenebrous Liar to take the night into the early hours.

Charlie Parr 1922 Blues by Tin Angel Records
charlie Parr tour poster

It must be a crazy world when “authentic” is a term used to separate an artist from the pack. This offering from Charlie Parr comes courtesy of 1922 Blues, his first single released on Tin Angel Records. Charlie Parr is a folk and country blues musician who is routinely labeled “authentic” and “the real deal” by fans and critics alike. Charlie shows up with a lived-in rasp of a voice, National resonator and 12-string acoustic guitar, and a banjo.

His albums have received critical acclaim and have sold well into the thousands. He’s toured the UK, Ireland and Scotland countless times, as well as pert ‘near every nook and cranny of the United States. He was a guest musician on A Prairie Home Companion (April 2004), starred in Travis Wilkerson’s independent film, “Who Killed Cock Robin?” (2005, also contributed to the soundtrack), and has had his UK releases represented on the UK independent music charts.

This is Charlie's first tour since signing to Tin Angel Records. Take this chance to see this wonderful musician in some intimate surroundings.

(r) SIGNS TO TIN ANGEL RECORDS

09/12/10

( r ) Drama Queen
a gay album by Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo

After the autobiographic chronicles of dark times that made my previous and cathartic album “In Pink” I felt the need to do an album not so focused on myself and experiment with more of an “outsider” look instead; that's how the idea of writing music as if I was possessed by the glamorous spirits of those holy mothers that are the divas of our times came to my mind. Useless to say that at the end this is still really a lot about myself, but at least from a different perspective. “In Pink” was also, despite guest musicians being involved, mainly a solo album; so for “Drama Queen” I decided I wanted a collaborator; I found him in Daniele Pagliero (aka Lo Dev Alm) , whom I already worked with on some specific Larsen (a band I'm a member of) projects. Putting himself, his programming, bass, arrangements and devotion at my service, Daniele turned himself (poor man!) into one of my mediums to project my vision and sound into the world. Daniele will also be at my side for the “Drama Queen” live shows. The album has been, as usual, recorded, mixed, mastered and coproduced by Marco Milanesio.

Trumpets of Death

Leeds band, Trumpets of Death, are the latest addition to the Tin Angel Records roster.

"Benjamin Wetherill, playing with the Trumpets of Death, steps right out of the ordinary immediately, treading a fine line between madness and marvel. His tremoringly intense persona is drowned beneath drones, scattered rhythms and quite inhumane saxophone playing, and takes persistence to follow. Constantly sinister, crawling and depraved jazz harmony...Wetherill pummels his chromatic freak folk with real meaning, and baffling energy." The Skinny

JULIA KENT SIGNS TO TIN ANGEL RECORDS

10/11/10

We at Tin Angel Records are very happy to announce that Julia Kent will be releasing her next solo album 'Green and Grey' with us.

After years spent touring and recording with other artists and groups, most notably cello-rock pioneers Rasputina and Antony and the Johnsons, Canadian-born, New York City-based Julia Kent found her own voice with her first solo record, Delay, an exploration of the private emotional worlds that exist within the disjunctions and disorientations of travel. Hailed for its "lovely, melancholy," compositions, full of "aching romanticism...rich melodicism, and detailed arrangements," Delay made numerous end-of-the-year best-of lists. Kent toured to support it throughout Europe and North America, including appearances at the Donau festival in Austria, the Lem festival in Barcelona, Suoni per il Popolo in Montreal and the LOLA festival in London, Ontario. A recent solo appearance in New York was described by Lucid Culture as: "...riveting and frequently cinematic...moving from trippy, echoey and atmospheric to stark and haunting." The album will be out early next year.

DEVON SPROULE – LIVE IN LONDON RELEASED

30/09/10

Devon Sproule’s new offering, Live In London, is out now.

Live in London, the 28-year-old’s first live record, includes a 10-song CD and 8-song DVD: 18 performances that showcase Sproule’s equally powerful and nuanced style. “Sproule’s songs ooze the atmosphere of balmy Virginia days,” wrote The Observer. “She grew up in a commune in the state – and her sunny outlook is infectious.” Scattered between songs on the DVD are video clips of Devon and the band in their tour van, backstage dancing, drinking, ribbing, & lamenting petrol put in a diesel tank.

Filiming for the DVD was done by our friends at ANTI/TYPE. we very much hope that you enjoy listening to and watching Live In London as much as we’ve all enjoyed putting it together.
For a one track sample of the DVD, have a look at Devon’s page under Music in the menu.

Baby Dee with the Elysian Quartet
SHOREDITCH CHURCH (ST LEONARDS LONDON) OCT 16 2010
Baby Dee / Elysian Quartet American singer-songwriter, performance artist and multi-instrumentalist Baby Dee will be teaming up with the Elysian Quartet at the 2010 Frieze Arts Fair to perform songs from her stunning album, “A Book of Songs for Anne Marie”.

It's fair to say that Baby Dee has lived a life less ordinary - from circus sideshow to street artist via a short stint as a lumberjack - and it's through this life and its rich experiences that informs her deeply affecting songwriting, which has won critical praise and seen her perform to rapt audiences all over the world. Will Oldham (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy) and Matt Sweeney were guest performers on Baby Dee's 2008 record “Safe Inside The Day”, and Dee was joined by The Cairo Gang and lauded drummer Alex Neilson (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Trembling Bells) on her European tour earlier this year. Baby Dee has also collaborated on records by Current 93 and Antony and the Johnsons, as well as opening shows for The Dresden Dolls and Marc Almond.

The Elysian Quartet is a renowned string ensemble made up of former students from Trinity Music College in London. They are focused entirely on contemporary and experimental music, and have received critical acclaim for their boundary-pushing performances, including their raved about free-improv shows. They have previously collaborated with Gabriel Prokofiev, the grandson of the famous Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, and opened shows for Polar Bear and Hot Chip, the latter of whom remixed part of their second collaboration with Prokofiev, “String Quartet No.2”.

Paul Curreri new Album 'California' release November 16th
Internationally acclaimed songwriter, guitarist, and producer (Curreri helmed five or six albums this year alone, including wife Devon Sproule’s new release ”Don't Hurry For Heaven!), California finds Curreri back in his Virginia studio, again handling all the instruments himself, as he did on his critically heralded previous effort, 2007’s The Velvet Rut (“A riveting trip. His best yet.” – Uncut “These songs sparkle like stars on a cold night. 5 STARS" – MOJO).
But a baton has been passed. Atop a circular and unworldly guitar riff, the title cut begins, “Too few folks know how fun it is / To believe in invisible stuff like this.” The Velvet Rut’s joyously pissed snarl has evolved into an undercurrent of something larger, something downright hopeful, unabashedly appreciative to be downstream from some rough stuff.
At 13 tracks, California covers a lot of sonic ground. From the opening track’s pounding piano drive, to the near uncomfortable honesty and simplicity of “I Can Never Return,” Curreri fastballs a lot of sticky ideas at the wall. There’s a fully improvised, fully belted, and fully unintelligible blues bash. Another number, “Off the Street, Onto The Road,” opens with a phone conversation between Scott Joplin and Joseph Lamb. On the only track to feature a guest, Devon Sproule shows up for a gorgeous duet take on Michael Hurley’s “Wildegeeses.” Curreri even throat-sings at the tail of “I Can Hear The Future Calling.” It’s a damn blast, and as life-affirming as a Bob Marley album.
In addition to guesting on telecaster for Devon Sproule’s October run, Curreri will be touring the UK with his English trio for the first two weeks of November to celebrate California’s release. The tour will wrap up with 3 nights at London’s Betsey Trotwood.
